Bernardi’s next auction of South African art, books and collectables will take place on Saturday May 6 from 10 am at its venue in Pretoria. A beautiful Pierneef oil painting, “Die Wolk”, will be the highlight of the art session. This large, impressionistic scaled landscape with a typical imposing cumulus cloud is signed and dated 1920. It will be sure to gain the attention of both art collectors and aficionados of our South African landscape.

In this painting, Pierneef clearly illustrates his affinity for and intimacy with nature, depicted here in typical impasto style and colours. Paintings by Walter Battiss, Gregoir Boonzaier, Adriaan Boshoff , George Boys, Gabriël de Jongh, Zakkie Eloff , George Enslin, Robert Hodgins, Anton Karstel, Tommie Motswai, John Muafangejo, Alexander Rose-Innes, Maud Sumner and Gordon Vorster are all represented in the 115 lots on offer. A large subtle floral lustre tile panel by the renowned ceramist Esias Bosch is an outstanding example of his art and technique.

Sculptures by Arend Eloff , Sydney Kumalo, Joseph Muzondo and Hennie Potgieter represent both the traditional and modern eclectic tastes of the current time. Fine Cape silver pieces by William Moore, Dominique Baudouin Du Moulin, Frederik Waldek, Johannes Vos and John Syms Wilcox, as well as a dozen sterling silver under-plates designed and craft ed by Abrie de Villiers, will feature and be complemented by European and South African porcelain, ceramic ware and crystal stemware.

Select antique furniture as well as some interesting collectables and die-cast toys will ensure the auction offers something for every taste and pocket.

The art reference books include some rare Battiss books, ephemera and memorabilia, as well as signed William Kentridge books. A selection of Africana, South African and local history will interest discerning collectors.
