June puts the focus on Father’s Day and the Antiques Fair, which takes place on the Upper and Lower Levels of Nelson Mandela Square on Sunday June 4, is the best place to get something totally different for fathers and grandfathers.
Forget about buying boring sweaters, aftershave and socks. This year give dads something different that they can treasure and will increase in value over time.
While the Fair has a wide range of antiques and collectables across all collecting disciplines, some appeal specifically to men.
For grandfathers, why not look at an antique walking stick, a good old-fashioned shaving kit, military antiques such as compasses, medals or swords or a good old fashioned Toby ju.
For the discerning father or husband, give him something that will be put on display rather than shoved at the back of a cupboard.
A rare collector’s book or print for the study; start him collecting silver calling card holders or hip flasks. Or if he enjoys the finer things in life, why not invest in a beautiful crystal decanter with matching port wine glasses or start him collecting corkscrews.
If he’s a more modern man, you could give him a classic watch, an original Zippo lighter, or buy him an original Corgi or Matchbox car.
The range is endless – and you can find them all at the Antiques Fair at Nelson Mandela Square. Over 60 antique dealers come from all over South Africa to exhibit.
Visitors to the Antiques Fair will also be able to buy the annual The Collector magazine which is full of interesting information on collecting antiques and collectables.
A classical quartet entertains the crowds between 11am and 1pm. It’s Joburg’s best kept secret – don’tmiss it!
