A chance to own a castle

The iconic “Castle Marina”, a landmark synonymous with the western Vaal Dam landscape, and its near 13-hectare surrounding land will be up for grabs on Saturday.

Park Village Auctions’ Jaco du Toit says the auction is sure to pique the interest of hospitality property developers in particular.

Starting at noon, Castle Marina, portion 28 of Erf 1877, located on Union Road (corner of Main Road) Deneysville, Free State, will be first on the block.

The property comprises a large stand with approved sub-division into six waterfront residential stands and a commercial stand that features a wedding chapel double-storey building fashioned as a castle complete with a drawbridge and a moat, previously known as “Castle Marina”.

The castle property measures approximately two hectares, with improvements of 822m².

The sale of the remaining extent of Erf 1877 measuring 12.8645 hectares, takes the form of a vacant, unimproved portion of land adjoining the castle, located on the western banks of the Vaal Dam with pending sub-division into 32 single residential stands.

“Anyone who has visited the Vaal Dam has undoubtedly seen the castle – and most likely heard many legendary stories,” says Du Toit. “The property enjoyed fame since its establishment in the ’60s, and its popularity peaked in the ’90s when it was converted into a restaurant, wedding and function venue.

“However, the castle has stood vacant for some time and, as such, been subjected to vandalism.

“A buyer with a keen eye for revenue potential will see both eventing and accommodation could yield handsome returns.

“Weddings of 50-100 people where guests can stay the night seems to be the standard these days. Most bridal couples seek a venue that is far enough from the city to feel like a ‘destination wedding’ yet a comfortable driving distance so that family and friends can attend,” says Du Toit.

Deneysville is located on the banks of the Vaal Dam, which just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg in the north.

It is dubbed a “yachting mecca” by Free State Info, and apart from many other aquatic sports is also known for its hiking, mountain biking, a crocodile farm and a vintage motorcycle museum.
