A 1939 Frans Oerder oil painting, Boslandskap, Noord Transvaal, three JH Pierneef watercolours, a Gerard Sekoto Paris-period gouache and three typical Maud Sumner watercolours feature on Bernardi’s forthcoming pre-Easter Art and Collectables auction next Saturday, March 24.
The sale starts at 10am with selected lots of silverware and European porcelain. Of particular interest is a large Doulton Lambeth floral stoneware vase and a Rosenthal white porcelain stallion, a pair of Waterford crystal decanters and a crystal commemorative Voortrekker water jug with glasses.
Furniture and embellishments include Victorian period rosewood and walnut open armchairs, grandmother and grandfather chairs, a lady’s Davenport, a suite of eight formal Louis XVI and eight Breton elbow chairs. Cape Regency and a Transvaal tambotie rusbanke are followed by collectables, curiosities and watches featuring an 1898 ZAR Kruger pond, Omega Seamaster, Rolex Oyster Perpetual, Tag Heuer Aqua Racer and Rado automatic gents wristwatches, an 18 carat gold Invar Compagnie de Montes Hunter pocket watch and silver and gold fob chains.
Farm outside Pretoria, Springbokvlakte and Bethanie, Rustenburg are the three featured Pierneef watercolours together with a 1968 Gerard Sekoto Paris-period gouache of an elegant Senegalese woman. Maud Sumner’s delineated watercolours The Old Harbour, Free State Landscape and Namib Desert illustrate free flowing masterful expression and palette use.
The prominent Old Master Frans Oerder oil was painted during his visit to Rosmin Farm outside Pietersburg and the work is recorded in the recently published monograph of Professor Alex Duffey.
Gregoire Boonzaier linocuts, an Esias Bosch floral porcelain fruit bowl and a baluster vase with cover are also included in the session with Zakkie Eloff sepia watercolours and an unusual spider web etching,
